      First thoughts of an Association

      • Dr. James C. McClelland first presented the idea of the formation of an association of urologists.

      First meeting of the Section of Urology at CMA

      1929-06-23

      The first meeting of the Section of Urology of the Canadian Medical Association is held at the Windsor Hotel, Montréal, in June 1929. This meeting was the first step in the creation of the CUA.

      The chairman was Dr. F.S. Patch, and many future presidents will present at this meeting, including Dr. Robin Pearse who presented on bladder tumours and Dr. J.C. McClelland who talked about diagnosis of Renal Tuberculosis using X-rays.

    • Second meeting of the Section of Urology

      1931-06-24

      The Section of Urology of the CMA met again in 1931 at the Hotel Vancouver with 75 specialists attending, mostly from the Prairies and the West Coast.

    • Dr. Robin Pearse

      1945-06-22

      Dr. Pearse was born in England in 1886. He graduated in medicine in 1909 and trained in surgery at the St. Peter’s Hospital for Stone in London. He was recruited by the Toronto General Hospital in 1914, but as the First World War was declared, Dr. Pearse went on active service with the No. 4 General Hospital and returned only after the war. In 1933, he became chief of urology and contributed to establishing the specialty and growing the department considerably. He was named as the first president of the CUA in 1945.
